Viridian Forest

Viridian Forest (Japanese: トキワのもりTokiwa Forest) is a forest which lies between Viridian City and Pewter City in the middle of Route 2 with both the north and south entrances of Viridian Forest open to the route. The deep and sprawling forest is said to be a natural maze as many people get lost.

Viridian Forest, the place quite likely most known by Pokemon fans so far as it was the place where the demo took place. The whole area seems quite large with it kind of easy to get lost in, with quite a few trainers wanting to battle you, mostly bug catchers, who will challenge you along your way but none of which won't be particularly difficult if you've been catching quite a few and adding Pokemon to your team already as you go.

Viridian Forest is most known for its bug-types and you can find a few at least sort of new ones in the cocoon-like evolutions of both caterpie and weedle. Unfortunately if caught in these forms, they will only know the non-attacking move harden, so you will need to level up and evolve them if you want to be able to actually use them in battle or catch them as caterpie or weedle.

The other alternative and a nice but very rare addition to these games is having a 1% chance of encountering either a wild Butterfree in LGP version or a 1% chance of encountering a wild Beedrill in LGE version. They will come quite underleveled but if you are lucky enough to find and catch one, they will be a great addition to your team at least for the short term.

As you make your way through the forest you may encounter your first Rare Spawn in the form of a Bulbasaur. These rare Pokemon can appear upon several conditions - one of which is to simply chain, or catch the same Pokemon, over and over again. The higher your chain, the greater the chance of a rare spawn to occur. Chaining has many other advantages, like the chance for increased IVs or even the chance for a Shiny to appear!

Rare Spawns can also be lured out by.. Lures. Your first one can be found right in the forest, but Lures can also be bought at Marts. Lures also have advantages in increasing rare Pokemon to spawn as well as adding a slight chance for a shiny Pokemon to appear.

Once you eventually figure out the maze like path through to the other side of the Forest in the upper left corner, you can move once again to a showdown for your first gym badge in Pewter City.

Viridian Forest

The Viridian Forest nature preserve is smack-dab in the middle of Route #2, which runs between Viridian City and Pewter City. Pokémon are plentiful within its borders, and many trainers come here to capture new specimens for their collections or to challenge other trainers.

Viridian Forest serves as your first 'maze' stage. Its hard to get lost in there, but first timers may wish to explore it slowly to get a feel for the layout. As you cross Viridian Forest, you'll be attacked by both wild Pokémon and various trainers. While encounters with wild Pokémon are random, trainers will only come at you when you cross their line of vision, so you have a degree of control over when they challenge you. Unfortunately, they are usually placed in positions that you have no choice but to pass in front of, but a few can be avoided by walking around them.

If you are having trouble defeating trainers in a given area, it probably means that your Pokémon aren't strong enough and need to be leveled up higher. A Pidgey will serve well in this forest, its Gust attack is very effective against Bug types. The highest level Pokémon that a trainer in Viridian Forest has is Level 9, so as long as most of your Pokémon are level 8 or above, you should be in good shape.

The pets and the wildlife that you encounter in the forest may seem tough, but much of it won't be. Wild and challenger-trained Kakunas and Metapods can't attack, they can only harden (which can make for some long battle that wear down your Pokémon's PP, so be careful).

Capturing Kakunas or Metapods isn't recommended because they lack attacks and are therefore extremely hard to train. Instead, capture Weedles or Caterpies and level them up; they evolve into Kakunas and Metapods that retain their offensive abilities. They evolve fast since both will be at their third stage of evolution at level 10. Kakuna evolves into Beedrill and Metapod into Butterfree. They both are rather mediocre Pokémon by base stats, so using them later isn't recommendable.

Pikachus are rare, but it is worth the walk to get one, as he'll be a great assist to Squirtle and will be vital to your team if you picked Charmander as your starter in the gym battle against Misty. Bulbasaur pickers may also want to get one as your rival will pick up a Pidgey, whose flying type moves are super-effective against Grass types.

New Pokemon[edit]

#25 Pikachu
Pikachu compensates for his low defense with a good dose of Special Attack and Speed. Electric is also one of the best all-around types in the game and while it makes Pikachu weak against Ground type enemies, Electric attacks absolutely shred the game's plentiful Flyers and Water-based creatures.

Even better, at level 26, Pikachu will learn Thunderbolt, a move usually only available as a TM that is terribly expensive to obtain. While catching Pikachu may take some time due to its rarity, it is recommended you catch one now as it will be some time until you find another Electric type. Pikachu can evolve into a Raichu, but only with the aid of a Thunder Stone.
